Low Calorie Snacks

When you’re looking for low calorie snacks, it’s best to stick to all-natural foods. There are several dozen low calorie snacks portioned into individual packets available in the aisle of your grocery store.

However, although there are more and more varieties of these being released all the time, they’re all rather meager, and they get old after a while.

Fruits and veggies are your best bet for a low-calorie snack. If you’re not a fan of many vegetables or fruits, make a deal with yourself to try one new one a week, and fix it in a couple of different ways. Some good snacking fruits and vegetables that not everyone knows about are:

Snow peas – raw, they’re quite good. You can dip them in low-calorie salad dressing, too.

Ugli Fruit – not too pretty on the outside, but yummy inside!

Lychee nuts – if you don’t see them at your grocery store, check the local farmer’s market or specialty grocery store.

Cucumbers – okay, so they’re more common, but people usually cut them up for salads, right? Slice them into sticks (like carrots) instead, and munch away! Kids really tend to like these, too.

Next, take a trip through the health food aisles at your grocery store. Things have changed a lot over the past five – even the past two – years. There are chips made from vegetables. Cereals that make great trail mixes. Organically grown nuts.

Dairy is another source for low calorie snacks. Low fat string cheese is tasty and fun to eat. Light and fat-free flavored yogurts are great, too.

Chocolate milk made from skim (nonfat) milk and low-calorie chocolate syrup is healthy, filling, and a favorite treat. Cottage cheese is another great one, especially when paired with fruit.

(There are even cups of cottage cheese packaged with fruit fillings…watch these, though, as there’s sugar added.)

If you are aching for some carb-filled snacks, stick to those that are whole grain. (Make sure “whole” is the first word on the ingredients list.) Whole grain crackers, whole grain bread, and the like are great snacks and very filling.

Be careful of any of these low calorie snacks, however – it’s only low calorie if you’re eating reasonable portion sizes!
